Level 1 terrain includes tarmac and recreational, multi-user trails. The latter usually have a smooth surface or small stones / gravel. There is usually little, or no gradient on these trails.
Includes terrain included in Level 1 but will also have stone-based tracks. The stones will be small; there will be no steps, deep ruts or obstacles.
Includes terrain from both Level 1 and 2 but also includes short sections of rough, stone-based tracks. These may have large stones, small steps, ruts and small obstacles. They can easily be walked, if necessary.
Level 1 hills include short sections of up and downhills. There are no sustained climbs.
Level 2 hills include numerous climbs and descents but nothing too long. Climbs might be steep but they will be short-lived and easily walked if necessary.
Level 3 hills include long, sustained climbs with steeper sections and long, fast descents. The views are worth it though!
To successfully complete a Level 1 fitness ride, you will need to be able to ride a bicycle for up to 3 hours with only short breaks. You should be able to maintain a speed of 5mph (8kmh). You must be able to cope with hills, either riding or walking your bike. There are likely to be 2 or 3 short ascents on a Level 1 fitness ride.
To successfully complete a Level 2 fitness ride, you must be able to ride your bike for between 3 and 6 hours, with breaks, depending on the route chosen. You will need to be able to ride up gentle hills (on tarmac) and be happy either riding or pushing your bike on longer and / or rougher ascents. There are likely to be numerous, short ascents on a Level 2 finess ride. You should be able to maintain a speed of 5mph (8kmh).
To successfully complete a Level 3 fitness ride, you must be able to ride your bike for between 5 and 7 hours, with breaks. You will need to be able to ride up sustained hills on tarmac and either ride or push your bike on rougher ascents. There will be numerous ascents, some sustained, on a Level 3 fitness ride. You should be able to maintain a speed of 6mph (10kmh).
